Agentic Commerce Explained: What Happens When AI Starts Buying for Us
The next shift after e-commerce and mobile commerce is agentic commerce — AI agents that browse, compare, negotiate, and purchase on behalf of humans. A practical breakdown of what is real today, what is coming, and why merchants in the UAE should pay attention now.

For 25 years, online shopping followed the same pattern: a human opens a browser, searches for a product, compares options, reads reviews, adds to cart, and checks out. Every step required human decisions. Agentic commerce breaks that pattern. In agentic commerce, an AI agent does the searching, comparing, and — in some cases — the buying, on behalf of the human.
This is not a future concept. It is already happening in limited forms, and the infrastructure being built in 2025 and 2026 suggests it will scale rapidly. If you run any kind of online business — including hotels, retail, or services — you need to understand what agentic commerce is, what it changes, and what you should do about it.
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce means commerce transactions initiated or completed by AI agents acting on behalf of a human user. The key word is "agent" — an AI system that can take actions autonomously or semi-autonomously to achieve a goal set by the user.
The difference between agentic commerce and traditional e-commerce:
| Dimension | Traditional e-commerce | Agentic commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Who searches | Human | AI agent |
| Who compares | Human reads reviews | AI aggregates data |
| Who decides | Human | Human (or AI within set limits) |
| Who pays | Human enters card | Agent pays via stored credentials |
| Time to purchase | Minutes to days | Seconds |
| Interface | Website or app | API or natural language |
What is real today
Agentic commerce is not science fiction. Several pieces are already operational:
- Stripe's agent payments infrastructure: In 2025, Stripe announced APIs designed specifically for AI agents to make purchases autonomously. An AI agent can now hold a virtual card, set spending limits, and complete transactions without human intervention for each purchase. This is the payment layer that makes agentic commerce technically possible.
- OpenAI's Operator and shopping agents: ChatGPT can browse the web, compare products, and in some cases complete purchases. The agent reads product pages, compares prices across sites, and presents a recommendation — or completes the purchase if authorized.
- Perplexity Shopping: Perplexity's shopping feature lets users describe what they want, and the AI finds products across retailers, compares them, and provides direct purchase links.
- Amazon's Rufus and buy agents: Amazon's AI shopping assistant helps users find products, answer questions about items, and compare options — moving the decision earlier in the funnel.
- Google Shopping AI: Google's AI-powered shopping features generate product recommendations and comparisons from a single natural-language query.
What is not real yet
The vision of fully autonomous AI agents managing your entire shopping life is not here. What is missing:
- Trust: Most consumers are not comfortable letting an AI make purchases without approval. The 2025 Stripe Agentic Commerce Report found that while merchants are optimistic, consumers still want oversight.
- Merchant readiness: Most websites are built for humans clicking buttons, not for AI agents calling APIs. The infrastructure gap is significant.
- Standardization: There is no universal protocol for AI agents to interact with merchants. Each platform has its own approach.
- Legal frameworks: Who is responsible when an AI agent makes a bad purchase? The user? The AI provider? The merchant? This is unresolved.
- Return and refund flows: Agents can buy, but returns still require human action in most cases.
Why this matters for merchants
If you sell anything online, agentic commerce changes the game in three ways:
1. Your website is no longer your only storefront. An AI agent may never visit your website. It may read your product data via API or through a shopping platform's feed. If your product information is not structured, clean, and accessible, the agent will not find you — or will find your competitor first.
2. Optimization target shifts from human eyes to AI parsing. For 20 years, e-commerce optimization meant making pages look good and load fast for humans. Agentic commerce adds a second optimization target: making your data machine-readable. Product feeds, structured data (schema.org), and clean APIs become as important as page design.
3. Price comparison becomes instant and ruthless. When a human shops, brand loyalty, design, and emotional factors influence the decision. When an AI agent shops, it compares specifications, prices, and ratings programmatically. Margins will compress. Differentiation through data quality, reputation, and agent-friendly infrastructure becomes the new competitive advantage.
What this means for the UAE
The UAE is uniquely positioned for agentic commerce adoption for several reasons:
- High digital payment adoption: The UAE has one of the highest digital payment penetration rates in the region. Consumers are already comfortable with cardless, cashless transactions.
- Government AI strategy: The UAE's National AI Strategy 2031 and active government investment in AI create a regulatory and cultural environment that is more receptive to AI-driven commerce than many other markets.
- Smart commerce infrastructure: Dubai's smart city initiatives, digital identity systems, and integrated payment infrastructure provide the foundation for agent-based transactions.
- E-commerce growth: The UAE's e-commerce market continues to grow at double-digit rates, with platforms like Noon, Amazon.ae, and local merchants expanding rapidly.
However, there are specific challenges: consumer trust in AI making purchases is lower in the region than in the US or Europe, and Arabic-language agent support is still developing. Merchants who prepare their infrastructure now will have a first-mover advantage.
A practical checklist: is your business ready for agentic commerce?
Use this checklist to assess whether your online business is prepared for AI agents as customers:
- Your product catalog is available as structured data (JSON, XML feed, or API) — not only as HTML pages
- Each product has schema.org Product structured data with price, availability, and shipping cost
- Your pricing and inventory data is accessible without requiring a human to click through pages
- You have an API or can provide a product feed to shopping platforms and AI assistants
- Your product descriptions are factual, specific, and machine-parseable — not only persuasive
- Your return policy, shipping terms, and warranty information are clearly available in structured format
- You accept tokenized or API-based payment methods (not only manual card entry)
- Your customer reviews are accessible and structured (star ratings, verified purchase flags)
- Your site loads fast and is accessible to automated crawlers (no aggressive bot blocking)
- You have Arabic and English product data if targeting the UAE market
The hospitality angle: agents booking hotels
As a hospitality marketing professional, I see agentic commerce affecting the hotel industry directly. Today, travelers use OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) to compare hotel prices. Tomorrow, they may simply tell an AI agent: "Find me a beachfront resort in Fujairah for next weekend, 4 stars or above, under AED 800 per night, with a spa." The agent queries multiple sources — direct hotel websites, OTAs, meta-search engines — and presents the best option or books it directly.
For hotels, this means:
- Direct booking engines must be agent-accessible, not only human-accessible
- Rate parity becomes even more critical — agents will find price discrepancies instantly
- Structured data for room types, amenities, availability, and pricing is essential
- The hotel's own content (photos, descriptions, reviews) must be accurate and consistent across all platforms
- Loyalty programs and direct-booking benefits become the key differentiator — agents optimize for price and specifications, so non-price differentiators matter more
My opinion: the shift is real but slower than the hype suggests
I have tested AI shopping agents myself. They are good at research — finding products, comparing specifications, summarizing reviews. They are not yet good at making purchase decisions that involve taste, brand preference, or emotional factors. A human will choose a hotel because of a feeling, a brand, or a recommendation from a friend. An AI agent will choose based on data.
My prediction: agentic commerce will dominate the commodity end of the market first — electronics, household goods, repeat purchases, price-sensitive items — and will take much longer to penetrate experiential purchases like luxury hotels, fashion, and personalized services. But the infrastructure being built now (Stripe agent payments, OpenAI Operator, Google Shopping AI) means the commodity shift could happen within 2–3 years, not 10.
The merchants who start preparing their data infrastructure today will be the ones the agents find tomorrow. The ones who do not will be invisible to the next generation of shoppers.
"In traditional e-commerce, you optimized for human eyes. In agentic commerce, you optimize for machine parsers. The merchants who serve both will win."
What to do now
You do not need to rebuild your website. You need to add a machine-readable layer:
- Add schema.org Product structured data to every product page
- Create a product feed (XML or JSON) that can be consumed by shopping platforms and AI agents
- Ensure your pricing, availability, and shipping data is always current and accessible
- Make your API or feed available to AI shopping platforms — register with Google Merchant Center, Amazon, and emerging agent platforms
- Clean up your product descriptions — remove marketing fluff, add specific factual data that an agent can use for comparison
- Accept tokenized payments — Stripe, Apple Pay, Google Pay — anything that an agent can call programmatically
- Monitor agent traffic — you will start seeing AI user agents in your analytics. Track them separately and optimize for them
The bottom line
Agentic commerce is the logical next step in the evolution of online shopping. E-commerce made buying easier. Mobile commerce made it portable. Agentic commerce makes it autonomous. The technology is being built right now — by Stripe, OpenAI, Google, Amazon, and others. The question for merchants is not whether it will happen, but whether they will be ready when it does.
If your product data is structured, accessible, and accurate, AI agents will find you. If it is locked inside pretty HTML pages designed only for human eyes, you will be invisible to the next wave of shoppers — shoppers who never open a browser.
